What is your definition of health? To you is it just your personal health or does it go beyond what happens in your body? How important is health to you? We’re here to help you understand and grasp the definition of health in a way that sticks with you and promotes change!

What does health actually mean- according to the World Health Organization health is “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” ( Why should all three of those worlds of health should be a priority is where we come in to stress the importance. Let’s face it, we all define health differently and our complete health falls on all different places of the spectrum of priorities. But, to make an impact on becoming healthier as a whole, there must be a general consensus on a basic understanding of health. Health is not limited to just our bodies, it is a multifaceted status and all have to be balanced to increase positive growth.

Because health is a combination of multiple areas of health, to make a difference as a healthier community, it has to start individually! A healthier YOU gets the ball rolling on a healthier community. Dedication, commitment, and motivation: they all have to start somewhere so why not make it start with you? If you take on the challenge to invest on your own (complete) health, you will begin influencing your family, which is another level of important health status itself. Then, with your family on board, they will begin to influence those around them every day too. See a pattern here?

If we’re all influencing each other to be healthier our largest world of health, in regards to scale, our community will be greater as well. Community health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles and research for disease and injury prevention. That is the boring text book definition right? At the end of the day it is simply saying community health is maintaining the good, overall health of the community in which you live in. To achieve a healthier community though, we have to start at the base… that’s you! You and your health are the key factors in building a healthier community.

Within our coalition, Activate Buffalo County, we are trying to put that bug in everyone’s ear about being the healthiest version of you. If we can get you to put your whole world of health at the top of your priority list, others outside our coalition will soon follow! In the end, we will reach a healthier community together!
