What is the number one fitness trend for 2016?
According to ASCM’s Health and Fitness worldwide survey (http://journals.lww.com/acsm healthfitness/Fulltext/2015/11000/WORLDWIDE_SURVEY_OF_FITNESS_TRENDS_FOR_2016__10th.5.aspx) wearable technology took first place this year as the number one fitness trend. To clarify, a trend is defined as “a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving” compared to a fad which is “a fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period”.
Accessories included in the term “wearable technology” are fitness trackers, heart rate monitors, smart watches, and GPS tracking devices. Many of the newest trackers include many features in one device. Some of the most common features built in them right now are step counters, heart rate, calories burned, active minutes and sleep trackers. Although there are plenty of trackers which have many other features if you’re willing to spend more money.
Ironic isn’t it that out of forty possible trends for 2016 a device came out on top for health and fitness.. Ironic or expected? The wearable technology game is just an advanced step calculator is it not? It simply makes a healthier lifestyle easier to manage and track. They conveniently fit on your wrist and come in a variety of shapes, colors, styles and sizes. Although it may seem strange to think a device is ahead of fitness routines in the fitness charts, maybe it is not out of the ordinary for our lifestyles today. Wearable technology is number 1 out of 20 other fitness routines such as High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), strength training and yoga and it stands to prove that advancements in technology is driving our world of fitness just like it is in many other worlds of our lifestyle trends today.
After being introduced to the market only a few years ago, fitness trackers and devices alike are expanding and multiplying.
