Happy summer! Where did the month of June go? And is it really just now officially summer—because the days have surely been packing some heat lately!

Well, no excuses now, it is time to take advantage of summer’s harvest! You might have noticed that there are local farmers filling up the parking lots around town. Summer screams fresh foods and hearty meals. The best time to take advantage of locally grown and fresh produce is now.

The Benefits

One of our own coalitions, Be Well Buffalo County, has recognized that it is important for all to have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, regardless of financial barriers or status. There are so many benefits from choosing to buy from those crates and farms surrounding our community, we cannot pass it up!

Some of those key benefits include:

  • Giving back to your community’s farmers
  • Affordability
  • Nutritious (and delicious)
  • Keeping your dollars local
  • Fresh produce—like really fresh!

Local Farmer’s Markets

The usual trend in our area seems to be Wednesdays and Saturdays. Both offering long windows of times that the farmers are out selling their produce. However, getting out there and making connections, you might be able to catch them or other markets on different days and times.

Word on the street is that some are bringing more than produce to the table and stepping up their game with honey, breads, and other locally harvested and homemade goods.
